faux-ditions time: unofficial voice over casting call for abc’s world news with diane sawyer

diane_sawyer_abc_world_news_allrightsreserved

What, did you think I forgot or sumpin’? It’s December and that means it’s time for voxmarketising’s annual fake audition or “faux-ditions”

This year we go back to the news division and our network of choice will be ABC as Charles Gibson is retiring and Diane Sawyer is taking over as the “World News” anchor. Obviously, they’ll need to re-do their opening announce.

That’s where YOU come in.

As you may or may not know, the great Bill Rice has been the announcer for ABC News for over three decades and does a marvelous job. I highly doubt someone of his great talent will be dropped so not only don’t get your hopes up via this unofficial audition…don’t even day dream. As always this is for fun (“this is not a competition, just an exhibition; please, no wagering.)

I’ll grab 3 judges and we’ll whittle all the contestants down to 10 finalists and then we will vote (but not until I call the vote).

You’re responsible for the mixing and audio quality (which has been a factor in past judging and voting); your audition needs to sound broadcast ready which means the mix should sound as great as your voice.

Here’s my demo – again just as an example – perform the announce in whatever way you think would be most likely accepted by ABC News producers if they were hiring a new announcer (which, as far as I know, they are not).

Peter K. O’Connell Demo Faux-dition:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

You can download the music bed here. (Right click on the “here” and click “save link as…” on your computer to mix it within your own system.)

Your short script from which to prove your voice over brilliance is as follows:

From ABC News headquarters…
This is World News with Diane Sawyer
.”

If you need a reference for how they do it nightly, you can view that here but we will NOT be doing the story teases, focus on the part starting at about :15 seconds in for the purposes of your audition.

Email your audition to peter at audioconnell dot com. MP3 file only.

File name: YOURLASTNAME_Unofficial_Sawyer_Audition.

LISTEN TO ENTRIES HERE.

I’ll allow submissions until it becomes tedious or boring. Only one entry per voice talent, please.

Have fun and Merry Christmas from audio’connell Voice Over Talent.

BTW, if you haven’t already taken the time to SUBSCRIBE to this blog, I hope you will now.

  3. What happens after the 10 finalists are chosen? I understand what is to be learned, but what is to be won?

  4. what is to be won is the pride of knowing your peers voted for you. Or who knows…maybe…just maybe a package of Morrison Meat Pies.
Nah I don’t think there is any prize…it’s just all in fun.
    Record, submit, enjoy.

    HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!

    Greg

  5. Ah, pure fun! Great, thank you! Have a good holiday all!

  6. were this a monty hall event, the prize would be a case of creamettes.

    what? no michael douglas intro? {{{shudder}}}

  7. Is there a cut-off date?… or will it end when your inbox is full?

  8. Is it me…or is anyone else having trouble submitting demos?

  9. I agree. Sounds like a fun challenge.
Question though. I downloaded the music bed and brought down the envelope to make room for the vocal track. I like the way they sound together in the Adobe Audition 3.0 multitrack

BUT when I bounce the two together into a single file the result sounds quite muddy. Anyone have any ideas how to keep a clean sound. Admittedly mixing is not my forte. Thanks.

    Lowell

  10. Hi ES:

The top prize is bragging rights. It the voice over business, that’s as good as gold.

    Hi Pinto:

Enough of your stalling, I want your entry for the casting call! 😉

    Hi Jamie:

I see no entry from you yet either, Missy! Let’s get crackin’!

    Hi Jim:

There is no hard & fast cut off date. I usually give it a couple of weeks. I don’t want people to get bored with the concept. I do it usually at this time of year cause things usually slow down somewhat over the next two weeks and people can spend 15 minutes on this. I hope you’ll participate.

    Hi Liz:

Less cheering and more auditioning…as in where’s yours? 😉

    Hi Rich:

I think you’re all fixed now and posted. Thanks.

    Hi Lowell:

If you run into a touch mixing problem, let me know and I’ll help you out.

My best you all- you too Greg!

  15. Peter,
I’ve jumped in. The waters are a bit intimidating, but exhilarating, none the less. Thanks for providing a VO playground for us.

  16. @Roger- you jump was a fine one, easily passing 5.0 on the Andy Richter Scale of Announcers (I call copyright!)

    Best always,

  17. Peter thanks for that inclusion…lol. No seriously I appreciate it.
Is it just me or does everyone else hear someone clearing their throat at the beginning of the music bed?

    Fun stuff peoples!

  18. Peter,
Another great job at organizing this year’s ‘faux-ditions’. There are some great pipes that sent samples.

  29. Hi folks:

There has been a slight hiccup in the Unofficial Audition and I would like your input if you could: http://blog.audioconnell.com/2009/12/21/world-news-with-diane-sawyer-evidently-does-have-a-new-announcer/

  34. OKOK. Finally got it done after my nasal passages cleared from an untimely head cold that came on right before Christmas. Yes Peter, and your nagging also helped me to become truly inspired over participating in this worthy endeavor. (’cause I ain’t yellow)
    Best,
    Bobbin ;0

  35. […] if ya don't submit, ya just might be a yella bellied chicken! Details on the audition are found here __________________ – Peter audio'connell Voice Over Talent Web: http://www.audioconnell.com Blog: […]

  36. Really, cross my heart I am not a yellow-bellied anything… but I nearly sat this one out since the first batch of takes made me just sound mad.

But never a quitter, I gave it another try… and… well, it’s on its way. Although I have to say that I don’t think Bill Rice has to be watching me over his shoulder.

Happy Nearly New Year and best to all in 2010.

    Cindy

  37. Hi Peter,
Just stumbled on to your site and this fun little competition. You can tell all the others to give up now. 🙂

    Nice web site!

    Thanks,
    Ron

  38. Hi Peter,

I did not find this site until last friday. I hope that I wasn’t too late in posting my unofficial demo. Wow, what a mix of voices! This is fun.

    Regards Jim W

  39. Hi Jim,

You’re posted and in the running. Thanks for playing.

    Best always,
    – Peter

  40. I warned them Ron but the entrants keep coming. Good luck.

    Best always,
    – Peter

  41. Cindy,

One of the purposes of this event is to let voice talents hear each other in a way they don’t get to thru normal auditions.

This way we can learn, improve and find new vocal performance techniques. Sometimes we hear things we like and things we don’t like….but no matter which, we still pick up things we gain learn from…at least it helps me anyway.

So I am glad you gave it a shot after listening to others.

    Best always,
    – Peter

  42. You’re not yella, Bobbin, you’re great, thanks.

    Best always,
    – Peter

  43. Just submitted my entry…looking forward to anyone’s feedback…..cuz unless it’s coming through your sound system, ANY feedback is GOOD feedback!
Thanks again for hosting this thing!
    Mike

  44. Any update on the “faux-dition?”

  45. Mike:

The judges are at their posts and I hope to have the nominees this week. I fell behind because business has been very good (knock wood).

But as punishment, I am going to dock my pay.

    Wait.

    No I’m not! 😉

Thanks for keeping up on this.

    Best always,
    – Peter

  46. No need to apologize! Glad that you’re busy enough with work to have it get in the way of “fun!” Hmmm…if the load gets too heavy, I’d be happy to help ya! (Sounds like The Band’s classic song, doesn’t it?)
    Best regards…

    Mike
