If you’ve ever been to Voice Talent Production’s NYC Voiceover Mixer, you know it’s either like being tailed by the paparazzi or being in a high school photography class. There are flash bulbs everywhere with people taking pictures with and of their new and old friends. It’s quite fun.

My head is kinda spinning from the whirlwind activity of this past weekend in New York City where Erik Sheppard of Voice Talent Productions held his annual New York City Voice Talent Mixer at Tonic on Seventh Avenue.

I believe this is the third annual and its my second time attending and I liked it better than last year (and I had a really good time last year).

The question with these events always is: are you doing this to be social or are you doing this for business. As much as I like my voice over friends, I do it for business contacts.

I can NEVER say for certain where business opportunities may come from nor can I say for sure who I am going to meet at these kind of networking events…but I know I’ll have a guaranteed success rate of not meeting any new possible contacts if I don’t go.

But on the social side, it was great spending time with my old VO friends and making some new ones…certainly seeing from familiar faces from VOICE 2010 was an added benefit as well.

The smartest thing I did versus last year, though, was to go into the city on Friday night. Last year I went in on Saturday morning and left on Sunday morning…it was too much. Coming in on Friday, I got to grab dinner and then Saturday lunch with VO friends from the VO-BB and have some great voice over conversations.

One never knows where such conversations are going to go and I picked up some real business nuggets by talking a little and listening a lot. These meals were a bit like what I think Faffcon is like (and I will see you there in February).

At any rate, my thanks to LindZ Reiss and Erik who put it all together and everyone who allowed me to spend a little time with them over this weekend. It renewed my faith in this business and the people who make it special.

Female Voice Talent and Voice Over Coach Deb Munro

I got a message from Deb Munro on Facebook that her Double Diva Voice Over Seminar December 4 & 5 (2010) in Toronto is ALMOST sold-out.

Two spots left…and she left me this message a couple of days ago.

So you better get on line to see if there’s still room for you.

Also it turns out that Elley Ray Hennessy is casting for a Disney feature during the seminar. There will also be a mixer Saturday night and i don’t think you have to be a part of the seminar to attend…but check anyway because I don’t know where they are having it.

Evidently Elley Ray Hennessy and Deb Munro either became fast friends at Voices of Vision in September or cemented their friendship there because they’ve scheduled voiceover seminar featuring them both on December 4 & 5, 2010 in Toronto.

According to their promo information for the event: “Deb and Elley Ray will engage participants on the vast spectrum of voice overs covering everything from characters to broadcasting, skills to business, with tips on the local and online markets. This unique workshop will push participants beyond their limits, expanding their knowledge about auditioning, acting techniques and much more.”

Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend because I will be in New York at the Voice Talent Productions Holiday party but that’s just as well because there aren’t that many spots left for Deb and Elley Ray’s special voice over event! Many voice actors know the names and faces of our more famous voice actoing brethren (and sisteren) who star in popular American animation TV series (you could throw animated movies in there but those castings always feel more about “movie star power” than anything else).

Some of us are even good enough to be able to identify an actor’s voice in animation or commercials on the first listen.

But what about the general public – do they particularly care what these voice actors look like?

I ask the question because on the Fox News web site today they featured a section called “TV Cartoon Stars Unmasked”.

Basically it’s a slide show of cartoon characters with a head shot of the voice actor next to it. Nice and deserved recognition for the actors, to be sure, but I’m just not sure the public really cares (and that is not meant as any slam to the actors).

September is National Voice Over Month

Unfortunately for my pal Dave Courvoisier, he answered the phone last week.

I happened to be on the other end because I had an idea which involved his baby – National Voiceover Month. It struck me that with all the things that went on in the voice over world in September, maybe a video should be created to at least attempt to capture the sense of the month.

That was the entire sum of the idea and Dave was all for it. He helped me gather the pictures and I slapped this puppy together.

My thanks to everyone who provided pictures and my apologies if we somehow omitted your event. No slight was intended.
