please be a part of my focus group

As you may know if you’ve read this blog ever, I can be somewhat obsessed with business cards.

Well as my branding recently changed slightly to be “Your Friendly, Neighbohood Voice-Over Talent” I decided I should update the business cards too.

So I did but I have come to a creative stumbling block for which your help is humbly requested and gratefully accepted (although it’s likely if I don’t pick your favorite, you’ll never speak to me again).

Everyone who has seen the front of the cards (the white side) really likes that design. So that’s staying.

But I came up with two designs for the back (both red versions) and I’m not sure which I like better (and I mean that sincerely, I do NOT have a fav, I like them both).

So please let me know from these two choices for the back of the card, which would you choose?

We will call the choices:

A. No Microphone (just red)
B. With Microphone

Thanks for your help.

  1. A.

    (By a mile.)

  2. If “B” had a Neumann with a shockmount on it than it would be the winner. Since it doesn’t… “A”.

  3. A. It compliments the front…

  4. Yep.
    A. šŸ™‚

  5. A. Mic on back is distracting.

  6. Peter, I like the version with the mic. I also advise against the red background…a very angry color…red is an accent color not a BG color.

  7. B. In my business card portfolio I put cards back-to-back, so only one side is visible. I would add the B side to my collection because it has your contact information. The mic is a good graphic reminder of your service.

  8. B…only because the contrast of the mic makes the white type easier to read, really had trouble focusing my eyes on the small white font on bright red, ….could just be my age showing.

  9. Hi Peter…
Good news…either design is a winner. So now it’s really subjective input which is still relevant, but you’ll never get complete consensus. I lean towards “A”, but Tom Morse makes an excellent practical point about “B” once someone files the card.

The front is fantastic…sleek, sophisticated, bordering on elegant. For the back, please consider placing the phrase, “The perfect choice for an awesome commercial voice,” in the same position as the line on the front of the card. Presently, the line is higher up on the back of the card interrupting the flow of the design as someone flips the card from front to back. You’ll have to move “commercial” down a line to do this. Keep a viewer’s eyes in the same spot as they turn the card over, instead of having them shift eyes up when they get to the back. I suggest this for either “A” or “B”.

  10. Hmmmm – I’m an old guy – lol so I like the mic version lol (B). BUT I also agree that RED should not be the background… I’d do the mic as a watermark on a white backgorund.

  11. I’ll take A. for $100, Alex.
The little mic on the front is all the mic you need.

  12. I’m leaning towards B. It helps make the text pop a bit more and is a great call back to your logo.

  13. A šŸ™‚

  14. A

  15. Blue….is the color of “dependabilty” etc….Maybe blue instead? a little bit of red is o.k….look at all the political stuff…..

  16. A, but try a very light grey background, to match the microphone on the front, and have your copy in white.

  17. A!

  18. So noted, KB. Have fun on your cruise BTW!

    Best always,
    – Peter

  19. While I certainly live my life in a fog, dear Mrs. Snyder, gray is a bit dowdy. I thought white on one side to represent the clean sound of my voice and red on the other side to represent the creative side on the other.

I don’t know if that imagery will be communicated to anyone but I also think them there colors are purdy.

    Best always,
    – Peter

  20. Hi Jack,

Thanks for the ideas. I think blue is swell but I’ve kinda done the red, black and white thing forever.

    But your concept is cool!

    Best always,
    – Peter

  21. Brad,

I will consider your vote to be a large A on the chest of a super hero!

    Thanks.

    Best always,
    – Peter

  22. Hi Jordan,

Thanks very much for your vote.

    Best always,
    – Peter

  23. See Mike, I thought that too but the consensus seems to be too much microphone. We’ll see!

    Thanks

    Best always,
    – Peter

  24. Sadly Lee it seems I’m known for my little mic. Oh well šŸ™‚

    Best always,
    – Peter

  25. I like B, but PLEASE bump up the font a tad. I hate the tiny fonts people use and if I don’t have my glasses and can’t read it – then I can’t remember you!

  26. I am on the ‘A’ train, Peter! Nicely done.

  27. I’m curious if the sample audience might be skewed as well. I know I’m my years in advertising catering to ever changing client demands brings my own bias with it. What we know with more certainty is that appealing to other VOs A’s the ticket. šŸ™‚

There are some great a/b testing tools on-line that you might want to consider toying around with. Like https://www.thewhicher.com/ The bummer there is that it looks like there’s a waiting list to get in for that particular one. But there’s various other a/b testing opportunities out there. You could even create a form or survey with Wufoo or SurveyMonkey, which I could help you out with if you like, as I also work for them on the support side.

Hit me on the face place or email and let me know!

  28. A has my vote, hands down. I also like the red color. It reads “warm and friendly” to me, and you are both!

  29. Either is good, but I’m a fan of the deeper red and the mic-I love using red in marketing, it’s an action color! The font overall is a little small for my taste, but given the design it would be difficult to bump up at this point.

One question–do you represent other talent? That’s not obvious from your branding, except on the back you note “male or female” so I’m left wondering….

  30. I’m going with A as well. Initially I liked B, but then I realized I wasn’t really seeing your list, as my eye was just drawn to the mic. I think A is cleaner and suits your purpose better.

  31. I like them both and somewhat partial to “A” but agree that the letters do stand out against the gray of the mic.
Now my hubby, Michael, is partial to “B” …..so of course Mikey like the mic! ;-))

  32. A. Cleaner and sharper.
