So I’ve been doing more videos on my YouTube channel, a channel some of you have subscribed to and others of you have totally blown off which is fine except you miss some OK content with more content still in development.
The videos I’ve been shooting (in HD no less) on my Kodak Zi8 have been OK quality and I am re-learning video editing on with Windows movie maker – which sounds about as painful as it is…I’ve not worked with it personally but I just have a gut sense that Apple does all this easier. Oh well, not going there.
Any way, lots of people (more than I realized before today) have actually watch this stuff. When I was at VOICE 2010 people said “hey, saw your videos on the blog, they’re great.” For some reason I thought they were kidding or being polite or politely kidding. They weren’t.
But I was a little nervous about the branding for all this. I’ve wanted to keep it low key but the purpose of social media is to get a bits of branding out there. I didn’t have a concept for how to do this until about a week or two weeks ago. At which point I imagined a concept and then imagined how much I’d have to pay some graphics person (or hobo with a mac) to create my idea.
Then I turned to the web and YouTube and realized how amazingly easy it was to execute my idea….which of course took me 3x longer than a smart, talented person but I’ll take my meager successes where I can find them. Plus I had to reload all the videos so my stats for these videos got zeroed out…but to those who watched, I say thank you.
So I finished my intro and added them to my three original shorts and will craft something for the voiceover demo pieces as well – although I just want to throw my name up there so it doesn’t look like I actually produced the videos I simply voiced.
To follow is likely amateurish and unprofessional to most but I was amazed it came out looking as good as it did anyway.
It’s at the very beginning of this piece and I didn’t have the budget to rent a lion like the folks over at MGM (I suppose you have to be of a certain age to get the humor in that). I hope you like it.

Yes, I’m bothered by something and I need to get on my soapbox for a minute…but not for me – for someone else.
As anniversary’s go, it’s a sad day for fans of Michael Jackson.
I imagine it’s almost unbearable for three important people. Still.
I am not a Michael Jackson fan nor am I a hater.
I’m pretty much indifferent…except when it comes to how his children are affected.
None of what continues to be reported in the press needs to be reported in the press. It’s not critical, vital, nor important.
Yet every time it comes up, three important people get exposed to it. Three important people have to read news that viciously reminds them of their father (not icon, not king of pop, not star – father) who they don’t have around them anymore and who they desperately would love to see again.
No. It’s NOT “just the way it is.”
No, that is a lazy-ass excuse for bad behavior (media feeding the mindless public who seem to ingest it all) and I do not accept that behavior.
If the public would stop reading (I have – well, I never started), stop viewing and stop buying vessels carrying Michael Jackson news (that isn’t really news) the media would move on.
That might help three important people to move on as well.
We’re the adults, we’re supposed to look out for children…so pass on it….and pass this message on.
Courtesy of Doreen Mulman on Facebook, a saw a video featuring interviews with voice talent discussing the challenges of voice actor parts in animation going to celebrity actors and how that impacts their careers.
As I noted recently, sometimes animated movies get picked on for picking celebrities to voice characters primarily because they are marketable celebrities (MJ Lallo offers one funny example). In other cases (I would cite “Toy Story” and “Cars” as two examples) the celebrities chosen to voice are clearly great actors whose transition to voice acting was seamless and superb.
As usual, Pat Fraley offers some really salient insight into the benefits of celebrities working in voice over.
While I applaud the producers desire to tell the story, a little effort properly checking the spelling of the featured actors’ names for the lower third graphics would have gone a long way to making this effort that much more credible.
Sometimes Hollywood actors get crap from non-Hollywood voice actors (of course not me, because I never give anyone crap) about why they were cast as the voices in an animated film.
Well, the voices in the Toy Story series for me have always made me forget who the “big names” were behind the voices. That’s a compliment – that’s how its supposed to be.
And now, watching them exercise their craft in these two videos from Toy Story 3, you may more fully understand why their performances are so amazingly good.
